Emperor penguin (1/2)

Aptenodytes-forsteri_15125.jpg ThumbnailsEmperor penguin

An immature (~3.5 year old) emperor penguin. The second record of this species on mainland New Zealand (previous record was in 1967). This bird was discovered here three days earlier, and taken to Wellington Zoo for treatment shortly after this photo was taken (suffering from heat stress and ingestion of sticks and sand).
