My photos and words by Mark Smale.<\/p>\n<p>See a sample of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzgeographic.co.nz\/archives\/issue-117\/onetapu\">the Onetapu story on the New Zealand Geographic website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I worked on the photos for the story for over a year, then just as the layout was being sorted, Mt Tongariro erupted and I was heading back to photograph this key aspect of the volcanic dune system. The weather made seeing anything a challenge, but after a few days of watching clouds I got a couple of breaks.
