Issue 117 of New Zealand Geographic is in stores now, and in it is a 14-page feature on part of the Rangipo Desert known as Onetapu. My photos and words by Mark Smale.
See a sample of the Onetapu story on the New Zealand Geographic website.
I worked on the photos for the story for over a year, then just as the layout was being sorted, Mt Tongariro erupted and I was heading back to photograph this key aspect of the volcanic dune system. The weather made seeing anything a challenge, but after a few days of watching clouds I got a couple of breaks. I’ll post some of the photos that didn’t make it to the article later.
